Position Summary:

The Staff Accountant is responsible for the preparation and analysis of NMSDC’s financial reports including the compilation of financial statements, review data and ensure financial compliance, including month-end and year-end closings and accounts payable. The Staff Accountant is also responsible for overseeing all aspects of daily accounts payable activities, ensuring controls over expenditures and compliance with the overall organizational approved budget as well as functional/departmental budgets.

Travel Requirements: Occasional travel for company business and event; 10-15%

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare asset, liability, and net asset account entries by compiling and analyzing general ledger information
  • Oversee the timely posting of financial transactions into the general ledger and ensure accuracy of data entry into computerized accounting system
  • Review postings into the general ledger and related financial records; post adjusting entries as required
  • Document transaction details and maintain recordkeeping and filing of documentation in support of accounting transactions
  • Recommend and implement improvements to accounts payable policies and procedures
  • Process invoices for payment by obtaining approval of invoices for payment and preparing checks for signatures, and spreadsheet for approval by ACH payment, avoiding payment of sales tax when applicable
  • Track expenses, process expense reports and ensure proper documentation is submitted to substantiate the expenses
  • Monitor account balances and related financial activity
  • Reconcile G/L accounts payable balances on a monthly basis
  • Oversight and maintenance of a P.O. system upon implementation and learn and use technology tools to streamline and track company spending
  • Assist with year-end closing of the organization’s fiscal year and provide support and documentation required to complete annual audit

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, or related field required
  • 4+ years’ experience with a wide range of financial transactions including AR/AP, as well as a strong understanding of federal, state, and local tax regulations
  • 2+ years in non-profit, or government setting preferred
  • Professional competence and thorough knowledge of accounting principles and practices
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, work under pressure, and meet deadlines
  • Proficient in word processing, spreadsheet, and accounting software
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills
  • Excellent oral and written communications
  • Knowledge of financial management practices and sound internal control practices to ensure the safety of the organization’s assets
