On September 17, 2025, the Federal Reserve lowered its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points (0.25 percentage points) to a new target range of 4.00%–4.25%. This was the Fed’s first rate cut since December, and Chair Jerome Powell described it as a “risk-management” move – intended to counter softening in the labor market and other economic headwinds, even as inflation remains above the 2% target.
