Claiming Our Lane for America250: Honoring the Builders and Partnerships That Strengthen America

As the United States prepares to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, many organizations will reflect on our nation’s history.

At the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), we intend to do more than participate in that conversation — we intend to lead a distinct lane within it.

NMSDC will recognize and elevate the economic story of America’s builders: the entrepreneurs, the minority business enterprises (MBEs), and the corporate partners whose collaboration has fueled growth for generations.

America250 is not simply a historical milestone. It is an opportunity to demonstrate how partnership, enterprise, and inclusive economic participation have always strengthened this country — and how they will shape the future.

Progress happens when entrepreneurs and partners move forward together.

Enterprise Has Always Been a Shared Effort

From the earliest days of our nation, entrepreneurship has been one of America’s defining strengths.

An early example is James Forten, a Revolutionary War veteran and free Black entrepreneur in post-Revolutionary America whose sailmaking business helped power the maritime economy in Philadelphia.
That truth remains relevant today.

Entrepreneurs build.
But ecosystems sustain.

No business grows in isolation. Every successful enterprise exists within a larger web of relationships — customers, investors, suppliers, and corporate partners who choose to engage, invest, and collaborate.

The Modern MBE Economy — And the Power of Partnership

Today, NMSDC-certified MBEs contribute nearly $600 billion in economic impact, while U.S. Census Bureau data shows that minority-owned businesses overall generate more than $1 trillion in annual revenue — underscoring their essential role in the American economy.
But that success story belongs to more than just MBEs.

It also belongs to:

  • Corporate leaders who made the decision to strengthen their supply chains by diversifying them.
  • Procurement professionals who saw performance and value.
  • Majority-owned companies willing to build long-term partnerships.
  • Americans across industries who understood that expanding opportunity strengthens the entire economy.

This is why NMSDC’s work has never been about one group succeeding at the expense of another. It has always been about building connections that create shared growth.

When MBEs win, corporate partners win.
When corporate partners invest in innovation and inclusion, America wins.

America250: More Than a Celebration — A Moment of Economic Action

America250 will not simply be symbolic. It will involve real economic activity in every state — from infrastructure and construction to logistics, technology, hospitality, manufacturing, communications, and professional services.

This moment creates an opportunity to demonstrate what inclusive supply chains look like in action.

For MBEs, America250 represents a chance to participate visibly in projects that will shape how the nation commemorates this historic milestone.

For corporate partners, it represents leadership — an opportunity to strengthen domestic supply chains, support local economic growth, and showcase how strategic supplier partnerships deliver measurable impact.

Local Impact, National Significance

America250 will ultimately be built locally — city by city and community by community.

That matters, because MBEs often bring deep local roots:

  • They hire local workers.
  • They invest back into communities.
  • They help strengthen regional supply chains and small business ecosystems.

When corporate members and MBEs work together on projects of national significance, the result is something larger than procurement — it is local economic growth with national impact.

That is the role NMSDC has always played: connecting corporate America with entrepreneurs who deliver results.

NMSDC’s Role as We Prepare for America’s 250th

As we move toward this historic milestone, NMSDC will ensure that the story of America’s economic growth reflects both the entrepreneurs who built businesses and the partners who believed in them.

Over the coming months, we will:

  • Honor minority business enterprises that helped build America, recognizing their innovation, resilience, and economic impact.
  • Highlight corporate partners whose leadership helped open doors and create opportunity.
  • Celebrate youth and emerging entrepreneurs, because the next 250 years of America’s success will be shaped by the innovators we empower today.

This is not about separating communities. It is about recognizing how interconnected our success has always been.

A Message to Corporate America — and to All Americans

NMSDC is not simply an organization for MBEs.
We are an organization built on the belief that economic growth happens through partnership.

Our corporate members — many representing some of the largest and most established companies in the world — are not observers in this story. They are co-authors of it.

America’s economic progress has always been strongest when people choose to see value in one another.

When we expand opportunity, we expand growth.
When we build partnerships, we build stronger industries.
When we invest together, we move the country forward — together.

Looking Toward the Next 250 Years

America’s first 250 years were shaped by entrepreneurs and the ecosystems that supported them.

The next 250 years will be shaped by young innovators — diverse, globally minded, and ready to solve challenges we cannot yet fully imagine. Their success will depend on whether today’s institutions, corporations, and leaders are willing to recognize their value and invest in their potential.

That is the role NMSDC will continue to play: connecting vision with opportunity and ensuring that America’s future economic story is built through collaboration, excellence, and shared success.

Because America’s story has never been about one group building alone.

It has always been about building together.
