Maumee, OH – CMS Corporation’s design-build Program Executive Office Building Six project at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) has received top honors from the 2022 Air Force Design Awards for excellence in design, sustainability, and energy efficiency.

CMS, teamed with design firm American Structurepoint, provided design and construction services for the $34.7 million design-build project that received an Honor Award in the Facilities Renovations and/or Additions category. The Honor Award is the highest-level award given in the Air Force design competition.

The CMS-led D-B team faced a daunting challenge. They needed to maintain the historical aspects of a World War II-era hangar, while renovating it to best serve the 21st century Air Force. The task called for renovating approximately 37,350 square feet of existing space and providing a new second floor within the hangar’s interior.

Judges for the awards program highlighted the team’s innovative solution to this project, which was to design a building within a building. This approach not only preserved the hangar’s historic exterior, but also provided long-term sustainability and met the military’s complex antiterrorism and security requirements.

The team’s exterior renovation, which included the full restoration of the original 1943 hangar door, maintained the hangar’s architectural compatibility with the Wright Field Historic District. Another award-winning feature is clear glazing along a first-floor break area, which allows building occupants to experience daylight and outside views while working in a highly secure facility.

“Our Air Force client was instrumental in the success of this project. From day one, they embraced a true team approach. CMS is proud to have worked side-by-side with the Air Force to provide a state-of-the-art facility that will serve the modern needs of the base for years to come. We thank the Air Force for this great honor and look forward to our continued partnership to revitalize bases around the world,” stated CMS chairman and CEO, Ernest Enrique, PE.
