Position Overview:
NMSDC is seeking an experienced and strategic Senior Director of Public Policy & Government Affairs to lead federal advocacy and engagement for minority business enterprises (MBEs), whose economic impact approaches $1 trillion. This strategic role focuses on advancing NMSDC’s probusiness agenda, emphasizing job creation, national security, public-private partnerships, tax reform, and trade expansion. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in federal policy, a strong track record of bipartisan collaboration, and a thorough understanding of the legislative process. They will champion MBEs as essential contributors to the U.S. economy while driving NMSDC’s legislative priorities and fostering trusted partnerships with the White House and Congress.
Key Responsibilities:
- Policy and Government Affairs Leadership:
- Federal Advocacy Leadership: Act as NMSDC’s primary liaison to Congress, the White House, and federal agencies, cultivating strategic relationships with policymakers and decision-makers to advance MBE interests.
- Strategic Advocacy Planning: Design and implement measurable advocacy strategies aligned with NMSDC’s mission and priorities, including but not limiting economic growth, tax reform, deregulation, and national security.
- Policy Promotion: Advocate for policies positioning MBEs as key drivers of job creation, innovation, and entrepreneurship, emphasizing alignment with national economic priorities.
- Legislative Monitoring and Influence: Collaborate with NMSDC’s policy consultants to analyze, track, and influence federal legislation and regulatory actions that impact MBEs, providing actionable recommendations.
- Representation and Advocacy: Represent NMSDC at congressional hearings, policy discussions, and stakeholder events, delivering data-driven information to strengthen MBE positions.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Lead initiatives to connect corporate leaders and policymakers, fostering bipartisan support for policies that enable MBE growth and innovation.
- Executive Advisory: Provide timely, strategic counsel to the NMSDC CEO and the board on legislative priorities, regulatory risks, and emerging opportunities, ensuring actionable insights and measurable outcomes.
- Strategic Engagement and Outreach
- Coalition Building: Establish and strengthen partnerships with business organizations, trade associations, and advocacy groups to advance pro-business policies supporting MBEs.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with NMSDC’s corporate members and MBEs to gather insights, ensuring advocacy strategies align with their needs and the broader business community’s priorities.
- Regional Alignment: Work closely with regional affiliates to deliver consistent messaging and coordinated advocacy efforts at the state and local levels, enhancing NMSDC’s national impact.
- Narrative Development: Create impactful narratives highlighting the economic contributions of MBEs, positioning NMSDC as a vital voice in shaping national economic policy.
- Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in public policy, Government Affairs, Business, or related fields required; advanced degree preferred.
- Experience: At least 10 years of experience in public policy, government relations, or legislative affairs, with proven relationships with Republican policymakers and thought leaders.
- Expertise: Deep knowledge of tax policy, trade, national security, and public-private partnerships.
- Bipartisan Advocacy: Track record of successful bipartisan engagement and legislative achievements at the federal level.
- Communication Skills: Exceptional verbal and written communication abilities with the ability to effectively convey complex policy issues to diverse audiences.
- Leadership: Strong leadership and project management skills, with the ability to oversee and execute complex initiatives.
- Collaboration: Demonstrated success in working with policymakers, business leaders, and community organizations to build consensus and drive policy goals
- Commitment: Dedication to NMSDC’s mission, with a passion for advancing MBEs as drivers of economic growth and innovation.
- Strategic Partnerships: Experience managing and hiring government affairs or lobbying firms to achieve advocacy objectives.
- National Influence: Ability to engage and partner with national organizations and coalitions to build broader support for NMSDC’s policy agenda.
