During the 1980’s, Chris Gardner struggled with homelessness while raising a toddler son – a gripping story told through his autobiography, “The Pursuit of Happyness,” which became a successful movie where he was portrayed by actor Will Smith. In 2007, Will Smith was nominated for an academy award as best actor for his portrayal as Chris Gardner. The “Directed Tier 1” concept has been moving through supplier diversity circles for several years. But, what is it, exactly? In certain situations, an OEM selects Tier 2 Suppliers to work with Tier 1 Suppliers to guarantee quality, supply, and other purchasing standards are achieved. While the OEM does not directly pay the Tier 2 Supplier, the Tier 2 spend is more appropriately counted as a directed Tier 1 spend since the OEM controlled much of the process.
